At least once a week, Monte English meets a new client who was involved in an accident and is getting sued for the first time. It is a fearful time for clients. They wonder what will happen to them, their lives, their savings, their homes and their jobs. They imagine the worst. Mr. English tells each one the same thing at the first meeting: “I have good news and bad news. The bad news is you were in an accident and are getting sued. The good news is you had insurance. It is my job to make sure your insurance takes care of this and it does not cost you a dime. I have been doing this for over 40 years and have successfully helped thousands of people like you. Relax. My staff and I will take care of everything.”

The “10,000 hour rule” says that it takes that many hours of practice to master a skill. As a trial lawyer, Mr. English has handled more that 300 jury trials. That extraordinary amount of trial experience has given him a mastery of his craft, tested by time. Mr. English says he learns something new in every trial. “I’m still striving to get better every year. Better advocate, better at technology, better legal skills.”

Nonetheless, Mr. English does not want to be remembered for what he did as a lawyer. “I hope at my funeral nobody mentions I was a lawyer,” he said. “I hope they say I was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. I hope they say I cared for the needy and showed respect and love for everyone I met.”
